President Bola Tinubu on Sunday evening, has officially announced the demise of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London after a prolonged illness.

In a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made it known that Buhari died at about 4.30pm on July 13, 2025.

However, in a swift reaction to the development, President Tinubu has directed the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late president’s remains back to Nigeria for burial.

While expressing his deepest condolences with the widow of the deceased, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, and the entire family, the President also directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast across the country.

“To honour the former president’s memory, President Tinubu has directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast across the country,” the statement read.

Late Muhammadu Buhari, was a two-term democratically elected president, serving from 2015 to 2023, and prior to his civilian presidency, he ruled Nigeria as a military head of state between 1983 and1985.

His death marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history, spanning nearly four decades of influence in both military and civilian leadership.

However, the details regarding funeral arrangements of the late President, are expected in the coming days.
