Crisis in The Herald stems from ex-GM’s noncompliance with document turnover demands

Workers at the Kwara State Printing and Publishing Corporation, which publishes The Herald Newspaper, have refused to allow former General Manager Yomi Adeboye to flout Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s directive to heads of government agencies in the state to hand over their roles. Adeboye, who had been Editor of the newspaper, replaced former GM Adebayo Abdulrazaq upon his dismissal by the governor. When AbdulRazaq directed all heads of agencies to hand over, Adeboye attempted to continue working as the editor, however staff blocked his way and took over production themselves.
Workers have called for an immediate official handover by the former general manager to the next in line as directed by the state government. They also criticised his poor management of the office while in post. Anonymously speaking, some of the aggrieved workers told reporters that they were frustrated with Adeboye’s attitude toward them and described how he allegedly runs down staff. They also accused Adeboye of being responsible for members of staff being unable to return home after work due to a lack of transportation.
Staff also alleged that Adeboye was refusing to hand over to the highest officer in the Corporation due to support from some “cabals” allegedly close to the executive governor. Workers highlighted that Adeboye failed to assign an acting editor and other senior staff members, insisting that no competent individuals were available. However, the staff dispute this and claim that they possess the necessary skills to carry out the work. Adeboye has so far not commented on the situation.
The government of Kwara State this week dismissed the boards and management of three media houses, including The Herald Newspaper, Radio Kwara and Kwara Television, directing their general managers to hand over to the most senior officers in the organisations.
