Former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon has commended the managers of the National Youth Service Corps for sustaining his vision of a united and indivisible entity which was the cardinal philosophy behind the establishment of the Scheme.

Gen Gowon who turned 86 today gave this commendation when the NYSC Family, led by the Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, paid him a goodwill visit to felicitate him on his birthday.

The former Head of State commended the managers of the Scheme on the policy of the corps which stipulates deployment of prospective Corps Members to States outside that of their origin.

He said the scheme has helped
to people to other cultures, and by so doing, pulled down walls of ethnic suspicions and prejudices and erected bridges of friendships.

The former Head of State lauded General Ibrahim for his tremendous achievements since his assumption of Office as Director General of the NYSC, advising him to continue on that positive light.

He expressed trust and confidence in youths as future leaders of the country, while admonishing Corps Members to remain good ambassadors of the Scheme.

The DG was full of appreciation for General Gowon for having the foresight to establish the National Youth Service Corps which remains a pivot of national unity and integration. He prayed God to keep General Gowon in good health in the many years ahead.

A birthday card was presented to him by representatives of Corps Members.
