In an inspiring effort to foster economic growth through entrepreneurship and skills acquisition within the African community in Brampton, Toronto, the Nigerian-based MakeMee Elegant Foundation has joined forces with the Salvation Army to launch the Africa Made Economic Growth Initiative (AMEGI). This noteworthy event is set to take place from August 14th to 16th in Brampton, showcasing the potential of African-made products and the talent within the community.
During a meeting with the Salvation Army team in Toronto on the 4th of August, Mrs. Kehinde Adelaja-Okoroafor, the convener of AMEGI, emphasized the importance of globalizing African-made products. She passionately believes that with the right packaging and nurturing, these products can achieve international recognition. Mrs. Adelaja-Okoroafor also underscored the necessity of equipping the African community in Canada with the skills to generate income and achieve economic independence.
The initiative will offer practical training in various valuable skills including Adire (traditional tie-dye), Kampala textile production, rhinestone embellishment, wig making, as well as shoe and bag creation. These sessions are designed not only to alleviate poverty but also to empower African immigrants in Canada, helping them become less dependent on government support. “Our goal is to encourage self-sufficiency through skill development,” she stated. “As the world shifts towards technology, skilled trades are becoming increasingly essential. By fostering these abilities, we enable individuals to create their own opportunities and contribute significantly to the Canadian economy as entrepreneurs.”
In addition to the training, AMEGI will feature an exhibition where participants can showcase their newly acquired skills and products, providing a practical platform for them to demonstrate their craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit.
The Mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, has warmly welcomed the initiative and expressed a willingness to collaborate for future editions of the event. The Salvation Army has also committed to being a key partner in this initiative. As part of the AMEGI, there will be special awards presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth of the African community in Toronto. These awards aim to recognize and encourage continued efforts towards building a supportive and thriving community, thereby fostering a spirit of collaboration and economic development.
This partnership between MakeMee Elegant Foundation and the Salvation Army represents a significant step towards empowering African entrepreneurs in Canada, paving the way for more vibrant and self-sustaining communities.
