NiMet Predicts Thunderstorm, Rainfall across the Country, starting from Monday
Share0The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting thunderstorms and moderate rains across various parts of the country from Monday through Tuesday.
The report, released on Saturday in Abuja, highlights the likelihood of heavy rains, especially in northern, central, and southern regions, accompanied by warnings of potential urban flooding.
For Sunday, NiMet anticipates morning thunderstorms in the northern region, including parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba, with additional thunderstorms and moderate rains expected later in the day across states like Adamawa, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, and Zamfara.
“In the North Central region, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, and Benue in the morning,” the report stated. “In the afternoon and evening, similar weather conditions will persist, particularly over parts of Benue, Kogi, and Kwara.”
The southern region can also expect significant rainfall. According to NiMet, “Morning thunderstorms with light rains are forecast over parts of Oyo, Imo, Enugu, Ogun, Osun, and Lagos States, with more moderate rains anticipated in the later hours.”
On Monday, the forecast predicts morning thunderstorms with moderate rains over Taraba, Gombe, Southern Borno, and Adamawa. “Thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated later in the day in regions such as Kebbi, Zamfara, and Borno,” NiMet added.
In the North Central, light morning rains are expected over parts of Benue, Kogi, and Niger, while moderate rains with thunderstorms will occur in the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, and Plateau by afternoon.
For the southern region on Monday, NiMet predicted morning rains over states like Enugu, Anambra, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers, with continued thunderstorms throughout the day. Similar patterns will persist on Tuesday, with morning clouds giving way to thunderstorms across northern and central states later in the day.
“Residents in major cities should be mindful of the high likelihood of urban flooding due to heavy downpours,” NiMet warned. “Strong winds may also precede thunderstorms, so it’s essential to take precautionary measures.”
The agency advised Nigerians to stay informed via its website, www.nimet.gov.ng, and urged airline operators and residents to heed safety advisories. “The public and airline operators are advised to get updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.”
