The Ogun State government has initiated a training program for automotive craftsmen across the state’s three senatorial districts, aimed at equipping them with modern techniques and technology in automotive mechatronics.

The training, carried out in collaboration with the World Bank-funded Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), marked its first phase by involving no fewer than 40 automotive artisans.

This training initiative is part of the state’s strategy to enhance the capacity of artisans in the automotive industry. It focuses on innovative skills, including the conversion of vehicle engines from petrol to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The CNG training component teaches the design and installation of CNG fuel systems while adhering to all relevant safety codes and standards.

At one of the practical sessions held in Abeokuta, Mr. Fatai Osunsanya, the OGSTEP Skills Sector Project Manager, emphasized that the program, which commenced three months ago, aims to upskill selected artisans with modern maintenance techniques and enhance the traditional apprentice training system’s relevance and accessibility.

“We are equipping artisans with up-to-date knowledge in auto-mechatronics, auto-electrical systems, CNG conversion, digital literacy, adult literacy, as well as health and safety,” Osunsanya explained.

The training program also focused on providing trainees with advanced skills, ensuring that they remain competitive in the rapidly evolving automotive industry. The artisans were selected from mechanic clusters across the state to participate in this pilot phase.

Lead Facilitator Mr. Osokoya Babatunde clarified that the CNG training initiative is not intended to replace petrol usage entirely but to offer a viable alternative for vehicles. He encouraged participants to apply the knowledge and skills gained from the program to enhance their work practices.

Representatives of the trainees, Mr. Haruna Akinfenwa from Abeokuta South Local Government and Mr. Sulaimon Oyekanmi from Sagamu Local Government, expressed their gratitude to the organizers.

They pledged to share the knowledge gained with other artisans in their respective clusters, ensuring that the benefits of the program reach a broader audience.
