The 2023 Gubernatorial Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Hon. (Dr.) Oladipupo Adebutu, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mama Lucia Onabanjo, former First Lady of Ogun State, wife of the late Governor Olabisi Onabanjo, and a revered royal matriarch and community leader, whose death marks the end of an era in the State’s socio-political history.
In a statement released by his media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, today, Hon. Adebutu described Mama Lucia as a dignified mother of the State whose life was defined by grace, service, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of her people. He noted that beyond her role as First Lady, she stood tall as a respected monarch in her own right, a bridge-builder, and a moral compass within her community.
Mama Lucia Onabanjo was widely admired for her quiet strength, humility, and devotion to community development. As a royal mother and grassroots leader, she played a stabilising role in traditional and civic affairs, offering wise counsel, nurturing unity, and promoting peace wherever she served. Her influence extended beyond titles, touching lives across generations.
Adebutu noted that Mama’s legacy is inseparable from the values of compassion, integrity, and selfless service which she consistently embodied. “Mama Lucia Onabanjo was more than a former First Lady; she was a symbol of motherly leadership, cultural pride, and communal harmony,” he said. “Her life reflected dignity in public service and honour in private conduct.”

While commiserating with the Onabanjo family, the government and people of Ogun State, Adebutu prayed for the peaceful repose of Mama Lucia’s soul and asked God to grant fortitude to all those she left behind. He emphasized that Ogun State has lost a rare matriarch whose impact will not be forgotten.
“May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace, and may her legacy of service, royalty, and compassion continue to inspire us all,” Adebutu concluded.
