A driver narrowly escaped death on Monday morning when a 40-foot container fell onto a Toyota Camry with registration number LSR 293 HJ at Mile 2, en route to Apapa Ports, Lagos.

The accident, which occurred around 8 a.m., drew a swift and coordinated response from emergency agencies, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

Eyewitnesses at the scene commended the timely intervention, which ensured the driver’s rescue. The victim was rushed to a hospital by the rescue team and received immediate medical attention.

Security personnel from the Kirikiri Police Division maintained order during the operation, allowing emergency responders to carry out their duties efficiently. The Toyota Camry was successfully extricated from beneath the container, and by 9:30 a.m., efforts to evacuate the fallen container were underway. LASTMA officials worked to manage traffic congestion and restore normalcy in the area.

Commenting on the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the importance of properly securing containers to prevent such accidents. He noted that negligence by truck drivers and owners poses significant risks to lives and property.

“Negligence in properly securing containers endangers lives and property. Truck drivers and owners must adhere strictly to road safety protocols to avert such catastrophic occurrences,” Bakare-Oki said.

He assured Lagos residents of LASTMA’s commitment to public safety and efficient traffic management.

“LASTMA remains unwavering in its commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of Lagos roadways and continues to work collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to uphold traffic laws and enhance public safety,” he added.
