The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has suffered a major political blow today, May 20, 2026, following the formal resignation of Asiwaju Akinloye Bankole (JP), the party’s former Publicity Secretary and Director of Media and Communication.
In a resignation letter dated May 20, 2026, and issued from his Ayepeju’54 Arcade residence in the Idosuwa compound of Ipokia, Bankole described his exit as a “difficult and painful” conclusion to a journey that began in 2002.
Bankole’s departure is anchored in what he describes as a drastic decline in the PDP’s political efficacy. He explicitly accused the party leadership of losing its status as a viable opposition force in the state.
“Political events in the last one year have reduced the PDP to a mere support group for the ruling APC,” Bankole stated. He further characterized the party as a “thoroughly dilapidated vehicle” that no longer provides a platform conducive to his political aspirations and growth.

Despite his grievances with the party’s current state, Bankole took time to honor the leaders who guided his two-decade tenure. He offered high praise for Hon. Dr. Oladipupo Olatunde Adebutu (LADO), celebrating his “uncommon courage, resilience, and steadfast dedication” to the people of Ogun State.
He also acknowledged Omo’ba Dr. Sunday Solarin, whom he described as a “cerebral leader” and a “priceless asset to Ogun State,” while thanking the Directorate of Media and Communication for their commitment during their years of working together.
Addressing his future, Bankole acknowledged that while his exit from the PDP is a definitive move, his political career is far from over. He signaled that his next move is currently being shaped by deep reflection and ongoing dialogue.
“Political idleness is a luxury I cannot afford at this stage,” Bankole noted. “I shall make my next political habitat known to the general public as soon as I complete consultations with my family and associates.”
As of this afternoon, the Ogun State chapter of the PDP has yet to issue an official statement regarding the resignation of their former spokesperson.
