Gateway United kept their hopes alive for picking the NNL playoff spot with a 2-1 victory over rivals Inter Lagos FC at MKO Abiola International Stadium.

The team, led by Samson Omiponle, remains unbeaten in seven games, securing four consecutive home wins, and has amassed 22 points, trailing the table topper Osun United by four points.

The outgoing Head of Service in the state, Mr. Kola Peter Fagbohun, performed the ceremonial kickoff. Right from the start, Gateway United showed attacking intent, with Samuel Christian attempting a long-range effort. Stand-in captain Ediddon Adrian also had a chance, hitting the crossbar with a half-volley, while Wasiu Falolu narrowly missed the target with a low shot.

In the 45th minute, Odusina Sunkanmi broke the deadlock with a precise low volley. Thirteen minutes into the second half, Babatunde Taofeek was fouled in the opponents’ box, resulting in a penalty which Ediddon Adrian calmly converted to double Gateway United’s lead.

With 10 minutes remaining, Akinola Wale pulled one back for the visitors with a header, but Oladeji Joshua ensured the scoreline remained the same by saving a free kick.

Up next, One Rocket clash in Akwa Ibom on Sunday April 7th.

Coach Samson Omiponle praised his team’s character, resilience, and grit, expressing excitement and confidence in their ability to secure a playoff spot.

He said his boys are ready to pick the maximum points in Uyo. “We would play One Rocket on Sunday. They robbed us of three points in the first leg at home. We will reclaim those points in Uyo”
