📍Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has issued a strong condemnation of the harassment and arrest of Ms. Azuka Ogujiuba, a journalist known for her dedication to truth and professional integrity. In a press statement released on August 29, 2025, the NUJ described the incident as “a violation of press freedom and democratic principles.”

The statement, signed by NUJ National President Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, emphasized the union’s concern over the treatment of Ms. Ogujiuba, stating: “We are deeply concerned about the harassment and arrest of Ms. Azuka Ogujiuba, a journalist who has consistently demonstrated commitment to truth and professional duty.”

The NUJ called on the Inspector General of Police to intervene immediately, urging him to “stop the harassment and ensure her release.” The union stressed that such actions against journalists threaten the foundation of democratic society, warning: “Any attempt to intimidate or silence journalists is a direct attack on democracy.”

Reaffirming its commitment to press freedom, the NUJ declared: “The Union will continue to stand firm in defense of journalists and the right to free expression.” The statement concluded with a call for respect for the rule of law and the protection of media practitioners across Nigeria.
