ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vehemently debunked recent media reports suggesting that its party structures have collapsed into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a strongly worded statement signed by Afolabi Orekoya, the PDP described the reports as a “fabricated and highly misleading publication,” labeling the claims as desperate, face-saving propaganda orchestrated by the APC. According to the opposition party, its structures across all 20 Local Government Areas in Ogun State remain robust, united, and structurally intact.
Rather than losing members, the PDP claims the reverse is taking place. The statement accused the APC of planting fake news to project a false sense of strength, masking a “devastating hemorrhage” within its own ranks. The PDP asserted that thousands of key APC members, grassroots mobilizers, and strategic leaders are abandoning the ruling party due to disillusionment over alleged economic mismanagement and failed promises.
“The reality on the ground—which the APC is desperately trying to hide from the public—is that thousands of their own key members and strategic leaders are abandoning their sinking ship and returning to the PDP,” Orekoya stated.
The PDP highlighted a recent wave of prominent defectors who have recently joined its fold. Among the heavyweights mentioned is Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, former Senator representing Ogun Central, who reportedly left the APC alongside thousands of supporters from both the APC and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) due to alleged “persistent disrespect and unfair treatment.” She was joined by other key figures, including Engr. Adeola Sosanwo, former Executive Secretary and CEO of the Ogun State Security Trust Fund; Hon. Lanre Sowunmi, former Special Adviser to the Governor; and Mrs. Bolanle Bankole, former coordinator of the Okowo Dapo initiative.
The statement noted that these high-profile exits have been accompanied by the defection of numerous ward executives and grassroots mobilizers across Ogun’s three senatorial districts. Orekoya warned that in the coming days, “the ruling party will realize how empty their party is, then, it will be obvious which party structure has collapsed.”
In addition to the influx of new members, the PDP celebrated the consolidation of its internal leadership. The party noted the overwhelming endorsement of its governorship candidate, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, by prominent political stalwarts, including Chief Joju Fadairo, a former PDP State Chairman.
Dismissing the APC’s claims as a “laughable charade,” the PDP urged the residents of Ogun State and its supporters to disregard the sponsored media narratives. “You cannot claim the opposition is collapsing while your own foundation is crumbling and your top leaders are walking out the door,” the statement read. The PDP concluded by extending an open invitation to all citizens who are tired of the current administration’s perceived failures to join them in their mission to rescue and rebuild Ogun State.
