As preparations for a successful conduct of the 2027 General Elections spike, the Ogun State Police Command has scheduled a security stakeholders’ workshop for September 22-23, 2026
The state’s governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun is scheduled to declare the workshop open and present a keynote address after which a veteran lawyer and public relations guru, Professor Fassy Adetokunboh Yusuf shall deliver the lead paper of the workshop.
About 520 stakeholders drawn from the state will take part in the training. They include Divisional Police Officers, Zonal and Area Commanders, Representatives of Police Community Relations Committees, State Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Amotekun Corps, SoSafe Corps, Vigilante Corps, Directorate of State Security Service, the Nigerian Customs Service, and Members of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and selected political editors of mainstream media in Nigeria and representatives of major political parties.
According to a statement signed by the executive consultant of the Workshop, Dr. Bolu John Folayan, the training will focus on inter-agency respect, cooperation and coordination, community engagement before, during and after elections; professional conduct and accountability by all stakeholders.
The signing the “Responsive and Responsible Professionalism Charter” by all stakeholders is one of the key deliverables of the training according to Folayan.
According to the consultant, the 1999 Constitution, Electoral Act, and Police Act empowers various all stakeholders to perform various responsibilities during elections and lack of adequate knowledge of these mutual roles often leads to glitches and often a breakdown of law and order which affects the credibility of elections.
“With improved knowledge of stakeholders in the law, inter-agency cooperation, media and community relations, successful elections are much more achievable. While the Constitution gives rights, the Electoral Act gives the rules and of course, the Police Act gives the conduct, and most stakeholders lack knowledge in these areas regarding elections,” he stressed.
Themed “Elections, Community Mobilization, The Law & The Media”, the special training will also focus on contemporary social media management techniques and fundraising as they relate to elections.
“Constitution sets the red lines. Security must protect these rights. Media must exercise them responsibly. No security operation should infringe on these without due process. That’s the way to have credible elections and that’s the goal of this training,” Folayan added.
