Calls for Immediate Action to Uphold Students’ Religious Freedom and Academic Autonomy
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest has received disturbing reports that Muslim students at Adeleke University, Osun State, are being compelled to attend programs they neither signed up for nor expressed interest in. This act not only infringes on their religious rights but also violates the fundamental principles of academic freedom and autonomy.
Universities are meant to be centers of intellectual exploration, personal development, and freedom of thought. Any attempt to impose programs on students against their will is a direct threat to these ideals. Such actions can have far-reaching consequences, including:
1. Decreased Motivation: Forcing students into activities they do not align with reduces enthusiasm, engagement, and overall academic performance.

2. Increased Stress and Anxiety: Coercion breeds discomfort, mental strain, and burnout, all of which negatively impact students’ well-being.
3. Violation of Academic Freedom: Every student has the right to decide what programs, activities, or religious engagements to partake in without undue influence.
NANS DEMANDS IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION
To prevent further encroachment on students’ rights, we call on Adeleke University management to take urgent corrective measures, including:
• Implementation of an Opt-in Policy: Students must have the freedom to voluntarily participate in programs, workshops, or religious activities.
• Student Consultation: School authorities should engage with students to understand their preferences and design programs that respect their rights and interests.
• Adoption of an Academic Freedom Policy: A clearly defined policy should be established to protect students’ rights to choose their religious and academic engagements without coercion.
FINAL WARNING & COMMITMENT TO JUSTICE
NANS Southwest, through the Office of Inter-Religious Affairs, will closely monitor this situation. Should the issue persist, we will be left with no choice but to take further action to ensure that students’ fundamental rights are upheld.
We urge the management of Adeleke University, relevant stakeholders, and student leaders to work together in finding a lasting solution that fosters religious tolerance, academic freedom, and respect for human rights.
